Hour by hour, 1 to 5 kiwis

All your breaks on one grid. Every daylight hour gets 1 to 5 kiwis, and a frame marks each break's best window, so you can see the tide turn before you ride.

Ask in plain words

“How's Canggu at 5pm?” Kiwi answers from the same forecast data. Add it to your crew's group chat and say “kiwi” for a roll call.

How Kiwi keeps score

“Kiwi's numbers are proven in Lisbon, on 30 days the model never trained on.

For Bali we'll publish ours only after the same test on local data.”

Our ruleNo borrowed numbers from another coast

A forecast that
keeps score.

Every forecast checked against the buoys

In Lisbon, every morning at 09.30 Kiwi scores the day before against wave buoys and airport weather stations, and keeps a rolling 7, 30 and 60-day record. Bali gets the same scoreboard, checked against the nearest public wave data, and we'll say where there isn't any.

Mean absolute error against raw Open-Meteo, the same test as in Lisbon. Until Kiwi has 30 scored days here, this board stays empty, and when the numbers come in we'll show the bad weeks too.

Retrains every Sunday, keeps the winner

A challenger model trains on the newest buoy data each week. It goes live only if it is at least 2% better overall and never more than 5% worse at any buoy.

How Kiwi will make the call

Frequently asked questions

Don't see your question? Get in touch

Is KiwiSurf live in Bali?

Not yet. Today Kiwi forecasts ten spots around Lisbon, Portugal. Bali is next on the list: join the waitlist and we'll email you once, when the island opens.

Which breaks will it cover?

We're starting with Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin and Balangan on the Bukit; Kuta Beach, Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Medewi on the west coast; Keramas on the east coast; and Shipwrecks on Nusa Lembongan. Tell us where you stay so we know where to add more.

When does the forecast arrive?

Every day at 06.00 WITA, Bali time. No jam karet. Each message ends with the best break for each of the next three days.

Does it know dry season from wet season?

That's the point of giving every break its own wind rules. In the dry season, roughly April to October, the south-east trades blow offshore on the Bukit and the west coast. In the wet season, roughly November to March, the westerlies turn the east coast on. Kiwi rates each break against its own offshore wind.

Feet or metres?

Wave faces in feet, the way surfers talk in the lineup here. Wind in km/h, temperatures in °C.

How does the 1 to 5 kiwi rating work?

Each break gets a score from 1 to 10 for size, wind, period, swell direction and tide. In the graphics that score becomes 1 to 5 kiwis: 1 kiwi is poor, 5 kiwis is firing.

How accurate will it be?

We don't know yet, and we won't guess. In Lisbon the forecast is scored every morning against buoys, on days the model never trained on. Bali gets the same test, and we'll publish the numbers only after 30 scored days, bad weeks included.

How does Kiwi know what I like?

You tell it once, in a few taps: your level, which days and times you can surf, the wave size and type you like, where you start and how far you'll ride, and your favourite breaks, picked from photos. Kiwi then alerts you only for sessions that fit you, up to 3 days ahead, one alert a day at most.

Do I need to install an app?

No. Kiwi lives in Telegram. WhatsApp comes later.

What will it cost?

At launch, paid plans may include a 7-day free trial for new subscribers, and you'll see the price before you pay anything. Joining the waitlist is free.

Where will the data come from?

Open-Meteo wave and weather models (CC BY 4.0), corrected against public buoys where they exist, plus airport weather reports (METAR). Surf at your own risk.
