Forecast point: Lakey Peak (-8.815, 118.371). Waves = estimated breaking height at the beach. Data: Open-Meteo wave and weather models (CC BY 4.0). Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information. Surf at your own risk.
Watch the wind after breakfast. Regulars say the wind picks up late in the morning, so dawn and late afternoon tend to be the clean windows. Look for the hours when our wind column is light or from the north-east.
The breaks around Lakey Peak
The Peak is the main wave, but several other breaks sit within a few kilometres. A local surfer calls the Peak world class and says three other waves in the area are well worth the trip.
Lakey Peak
A-frame reefIntermediate+A mechanical A-frame splits into a left and a right over sharp, shallow reef. The left is the more consistent side and gives long rides with the odd barrel. The right has a barrel section and wants more water over the reef.
Rides can run up to about 50 metres in each direction. The shape of the reef focuses the wave's power, so getting caught inside on a solid day is rough. Sources: lineup-experience.com · yeeew.com · baliwaves.com
Lakey Pipe
Reef breakHeavyLakey Pipe sits about 423 metres from the Peak. One local report from May describes heavy groundswell slamming into the reefs at both the Peak and Pipe. Sources: yeeew.com · baliwaves.com
Nungas
Left pointIntermediate+Nungas is a long, mellow left-hand point over reef, about 1.1 km from the Peak. It suits intermediate and advanced surfers. On big groundswell days it can get wide, bumpy clean-up sets. Sources: lineup-experience.com · yeeew.com · baliwaves.com

What Lakey Peak needs to fire
These are the exact rules behind Kiwi's rating for this spot. Every hour of the forecast is scored on all four, then turned into a rating of 1 to 5 stars.
Swell
South-west swell is king
The reef faces south-west and takes swell from the south through to the west. Another guide also names south-west as the ideal swell angle.
Wind
North-east wind is offshore
Our forecast counts a north-easterly as offshore here. In December last year, about 81% of days had offshore wind.
Tide
Mid to high tide
Our setup favours mid to high tide. At low water the reef gets shallow, and the right in particular stops working.
Size
Best at 1.5–2.5 metres
Below about 1 metre it is usually too small, and 1.5 to 2.5 metres is the sweet spot. Above about 4 metres it gets too big for most surfers.
Shortcut: look for a 1.5–2.5 m swell from the south-west, a light north-east wind, and a mid to high tide.
The best months to surf Lakey Peak
We replayed Kiwi's rating on every day of the last year and counted how often Lakey Peak's best window reached 4 or 5 stars.
Feb–AprMost good days in our model
Our modelled year gives the highest share of top-rated days here, about 46% in February and 43% in April. In February, about 93% of days rated fair or better.
May–JunDry season begins
Another guide calls May to October the best time for waves, and names June as the cleanest month. In our model, about 29% of days are top-rated in May and 23% in June.
Jul–OctBigger, cooler, busier
Waves average around 2.2–2.5 metres in our model, but fewer days reach the top rating, dropping to about 12% in October. Crowds can be significant in the peak months.
Nov–JanWarm water, mixed days
In December, about 39% of modelled days are top-rated, compared with 23% in January. Last December, about 81% of days had offshore wind.
Before you go
Reef and impact zone
The reef is sharp and gets very shallow at low tide. Reef cuts are common, and broken ribs have been reported.
One long-time visitor says he saw more head wounds at the Peak than anywhere else he surfed in Indonesia. The flat reef is fairly forgiving except around full and new moon, when the tide range is biggest. Regulars recommend booties. Sources: lineup-experience.com · baliwaves.com
Getting there
The closest airport is Muhammad Salahuddin Airport in Bima (BMU), about 44 km away in a straight line. Sumbawa Besar Airport (SWG) is the second closest, about 111 km away.
From Bima you can get a ride out to Lakey Hu'u, on a road that crosses two mountain ranges. Sources: surf-forecast.com · baliwaves.com
Reaching the lineup
You reach the lineup by paddling around the reef. The paddle is about 450 metres, or you can take the zodiac for a small fee for the return trip. Sources: lineup-experience.com
Crowds and etiquette
Lakey Peak is often crowded, especially in peak season and during contests. Local surfers are out every day and the take-off is contested, so wait your turn.
When it gets too busy, Cobblestones is a 45-minute walk or a short zodiac ride away. Sources: surf-forecast.com · lineup-experience.com
Water temperature and wetsuit
The water is warm all year, from about 30 °C in December down to about 25.8 °C in August. The coolest months are July to September, at around 26 °C.

Best time of day
Go early, because the wind usually picks up in the late morning. In May, the trade winds sometimes blow cross-shore by mid-morning. Sources: lineup-experience.com · baliwaves.com
On land
There is plenty of surf infrastructure nearby, including places to stay and surf services. The local beach community makes its living directly from surfing, and there is a café on the beachfront.

Where the numbers come from
The method
Kiwi takes Open-Meteo's wave and wind models (ECMWF WAM, Météo-France, NOAA GFS and Open-Meteo's best-match blend) at a point about 5 km off Lakey Peak. There is no buoy correction here yet: these are the models as they come.
Each hour is scored on the four rules above (swell, wind, tide, size). The stars are calibrated on a full year of data for Indonesia, so 4 stars at Lakey Peak is a genuinely good day by that country's standard.
What we can say
The season chart and the stars use the same rules, replayed on the archive: a month marked good was good by these rules, not by a surf report.
Without a buoy nearby, the size at the beach is our model's estimate, not a measurement.
