How we ranked them

Each break has a set-up in our forecast engine: which way it faces, the swell window it opens to, its offshore wind, the tide and the wave size it likes. For every day of December 2025 we replayed the hour-by-hour wave, swell, wind and tide models at the break and rated its best daylight window from 1 to 5 stars, on one scale for the whole world, so a 4-star day in Japan means the same as one in Costa Rica.

The rank weighs the share of days at 4-5 stars (60%) and at 3 stars or more (40%), with at most 7 breaks per country so one coast can't fill the list. Breaks whose set-up we could not confirm were left out. Water temperature is the monthly mean sea-surface temperature from the Open-Meteo marine model. One December is one December: the guides show 12 months, and today's stars come from the live forecast.
