Forecast point: Miyazaki (31.866, 131.455). Waves = estimated breaking height at the beach. Data: Open-Meteo wave and weather models (CC BY 4.0). Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information. Surf at your own risk.

Watch the wind column first. West wind is offshore here. One forecast warned that wind swinging to the north-east in the afternoon could spoil the waves, and advised getting in early.

The break guide

Kisakihama and the Miyazaki coast

Miyazaki city sits on the Hyūga Sea, which lies to its east. Live cams on ii-nami.com cover named spots along the coast, from Hitotsuba through two Kisakihama cams to Aoshima Beach. Daily reports often name single peaks along Kisakihama, so it helps to know them.

This is the peak in front of the broadcast tower, and a local shop photographs it in its daily Kisakihama report. The beach is a beach break that suits all levels.

On one early November evening the shop saw a strong west wind blowing offshore and fast waves with small tubes. The same report also mentions a current running through the line-up. Sources: newwavejp.blog46.fc2.com

  2. Kisakihama – Kaidan-mae (階段前)

ii-nami.com runs one live cam at Kisakihama Kaeda and a second one at central Kisakihama. You can compare the two cams before you choose where to paddle out. Sources: ii-nami.com

  4. Aoshima Beach (青島ビーチ)

    BeachBusy peaks

Shop reports describe five peaks here, with about 5 to 20 surfers on each. One named peak is "ANA-mae". A west wind is offshore at Kisakihama but blows side-shore at Aoshima.

On a morning when Kisakihama was huge, one local shop pointed surfers to Aoshima instead. Aoshima has its own daily report from a shop on site. Sources: newwavejp.blog46.fc2.com · gakkysurfshop.blogspot.com · ameblo.jp

When it works

What Miyazaki needs to fire

These are the exact rules behind Kiwi's rating for this spot. Every hour of the forecast is scored on all four, then turned into a rating of 1 to 5 stars.

Swell

East-facing, wide swell window

The beach faces east at about 100°. It picks up swell from the north-east round to the south.

Wind

West wind is offshore

A wind from the west blows offshore and grooms the waves. Last December the wind was offshore on about 90% of days.

Tide

Aim for mid tide

Kisakihama works best around mid tide. Check the tide row next to the wave size.

Size

1.0–1.8 m is ideal

Below about 0.5 m it is usually too small, and 1.0 to 1.8 m is the sweet spot. Above about 2.5 m it gets too big for this beach.

Shortcut: look for a swell from the north-east round to the south of 1 to 1.8 m, a west wind and a mid tide.

Seasons

The best months to surf Miyazaki

We replayed Kiwi's rating on every day of the last year and counted how often Miyazaki's best window reached 4 or 5 stars.

Days with 4 or 5 starsDays with 3 stars or more
Kiwi's current rules replayed on archived Open-Meteo wave and weather data, 2025-10-30 – 2026-10-31 (367 days). One year, so one season of each month. Model data, not observations.

Nov–DecThe most reliable run

December had a 4+ rating on 52% of days and November on 43%, the best pair of months in our year. In December, 68% of days reached at least 3+.

Jan–AprPatchy, with flat spells

January was the weak spot with 13% of days at 4+, and February to April ran at 20 to 32%. One local notes that a winter can bring long flat spells, then closeouts as the seasons change, with the sandbanks settling again in spring.

May–JulStrong May, quiet June

May was excellent, with 45% of days at 4+ and 71% at 3+. June fell to 7% and July recovered to 39%. A local describes rainy-season south swell as side-on and weak.

Aug–OctTyphoon wildcard

The share of 4+ days fell from 23% in August to 12% in October. Summer is typhoon season in Miyazaki, and long-period typhoon swell can bring big, hard conditions.

Need to know

Before you go

Rips and hard days

Rips are a hazard at Kisakihama. Local reports also mention currents in the line-up.

On big typhoon swells, conditions are hard and mainly for intermediate and advanced surfers. Forecasters advise choosing a spot that matches your skill. Sources: newwavejp.blog46.fc2.com · m.bc01.com

Getting there

Miyazaki is the capital of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu, and it has its own airport. The JR Nichinan Line runs south from Minami-Miyazaki, with stops including Kibana and Kodomonokuni.

One surf shop near the airport offers free pick-up from the airport and city hotels for its surf guide service. There is also a surf-friendly rental car company at Miyazaki Airport. Sources: en.wikipedia.org · gakkysurfshop.blogspot.com · aloha-rentacar.net

Crowds

Kisakihama gets crowded at weekends. Shop reports count anywhere from a handful of surfers to around 20 at Kisakihama, and 5 to 20 per peak at Aoshima. Sources: newwavejp.blog46.fc2.com

Water temperature and wetsuits

The water is coldest in February at about 16.9°C. In December and January it is about 18 to 20°C.

May and November sit around 22 to 23°C. From July to September the water reaches about 28 to 29°C.

Best time of day

Mornings are often best, because one forecast warned that afternoon wind swinging to the north-east could spoil the waves. Around Golden Week in early May it is light before 5 am, which a local dawn surfer welcomes.

In early November, one shop says you can surf from just after 6 am until about 6 pm. Sources: m.bc01.com · aloha-rentacar.net · newwavejp.blog46.fc2.com

Lessons and rentals

Local shops run surf schools and trial lessons, with board and wetsuit included. Rental surfboards, bodyboards and wetsuits are available by the day. Sources: gakkysurfshop.blogspot.com · newwavejp.blog46.fc2.com

How Kiwi rates it

Where the numbers come from

The method

Kiwi takes Open-Meteo's wave and wind models (ECMWF WAM, Météo-France, NOAA GFS and Open-Meteo's best-match blend) at a point about 5 km off Miyazaki. There is no buoy correction here yet: these are the models as they come.

Each hour is scored on the four rules above (swell, wind, tide, size). The stars are calibrated on a full year of data for Japan, so 4 stars at Miyazaki is a genuinely good day by that country's standard.

What we can say

1 yearof data behind the stars
4×new forecast runs a day

The season chart and the stars use the same rules, replayed on the archive: a month marked good was good by these rules, not by a surf report.

Without a buoy nearby, the size at the beach is our model's estimate, not a measurement.
