Watch the wind after lunch. A strong sea breeze often blows in after midday and spoils the surface, so the clean hours are usually before it arrives.
Surfing Trigg and nearby Perth beaches
Trigg sits in the City of Stirling, and a small island lies just off its shore. The area is a beach and point break, and the waves at the beach break both left and right. Surfers and bodyboarders make up most of the crowd here.
Trigg Point
Reef breakIntermediate+This is the break our forecast is set for: a shallow reef facing west that likes a mid tide.
In summer, moving sand can fill the channel between the blue hole and the Trigg Point take-off, which links the wave into a long ride towards Trigg Beach. Sources: en.wikipedia.org
Trigg Beach
Beach breakBusyThe beach has peaks that run both left and right, and it is rated fairly consistent. It is often crowded, and there are groynes and rocks to keep clear of. Sources: surf-forecast.com

What Perth needs to fire
These are the exact rules behind Kiwi's rating for this spot. Every hour of the forecast is scored on all four, then turned into a rating of 1 to 5 stars.
Swell
West-facing, wide swell window
Trigg Point faces west and picks up swell from the south round to the north-west. One guide names west-south-west groundswell as the best angle.
Wind
East is offshore
Wind from the east blows offshore here. A strong sea breeze after midday is one of the main things that spoils a session.
Tide
Mid tide suits the reef
Our setup favours a mid tide on this shallow reef.
Size
Best from 0.8 to 1.8 m
Waves of 0.8 to 1.8 m are ideal. Below about 0.4 m it is too small, and from about 2.5 m it gets too big.
Shortcut: look for an east wind, a mid tide and 0.8 to 1.8 m of swell in the morning, before the sea breeze arrives.
The best months to surf Perth
We replayed Kiwi's rating on every day of the last year and counted how often Perth's best window reached 4 or 5 stars.
NovβMarMost good days
February (64% of days rated 4+) and March (61%) are the strongest months, with November at 53% and December at 45%. Typical sizes sit around 1.6 to 1.7 m.
AprβMayStill a solid run
About half of days rate 4+, with 50% in April and 48% in May. Sizes average about 1.6 to 1.8 m.
JunβJulBigger, more mixed
Swell grows to around 1.9 to 2.1 m, but only 30 to 35% of days rate 4+. Another guide rates winter, and June in particular, as the best time for clean waves, at about 40% of the time.
AugβOctOften too big
Typical sizes of 2.2 to 2.5 m sit above the ideal range and reach the too-big mark of 2.5 m in August, and only 13 to 17% of days rate 4+.

Where the numbers come from
The method
Kiwi takes Open-Meteo's wave and wind models (ECMWF WAM, MΓ©tΓ©o-France, NOAA GFS and Open-Meteo's best-match blend) at a point about 5 km off Perth. There is no buoy correction here yet: these are the models as they come.
Each hour is scored on the four rules above (swell, wind, tide, size). The stars are calibrated on a full year of data for Australia, so 4 stars at Perth is a genuinely good day by that country's standard.
What we can say
The season chart and the stars use the same rules, replayed on the archive: a month marked good was good by these rules, not by a surf report.
Without a buoy nearby, the size at the beach is our model's estimate, not a measurement.
