Taito surf forecast

Taito is a sandy beach break in Isumi, Chiba. Sandbars build up beside the Taito fishing port breakwater and can shape good waves. The breakwater and the cape take some power out of the swell, so it is often softer than the beaches nearby. It can also stay rideable when a south wind spoils other spots.

Forecast point: Taito (35.326, 140.407). Waves = estimated breaking height at the beach. Data: Open-Meteo wave and weather models (CC BY 4.0). Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information. Surf at your own risk.

Watch the wind column first. At Taito, wind from the west is offshore. Local guides say anything from west to south-west keeps the faces clean.

The break guide

Surfing Taito: the spot guide

Taito sits at the southern end of Kujūkuri Beach, close to Cape Taitō in Isumi city. The bottom is sand, and the best banks form near the fishing port breakwater. On small days it is a well-known longboard and learner spot. Quality waves arrive consistently through the year, so it is popular with advanced surfers too.

  1. Taito Point (breakwater side)

    Beach breakCrowded

This is the main peak, beside the breakwater of Taito fishing port, where sandbars collect. When the sand is in shape, you can ride long, well-formed rights from the breakwater side.

This peak gets the busiest of all. Local rules apply here, so watch and follow how the regulars share the waves. Our forecast notes currents near the breakwater. Sources: surfers-ocean.com · surfarea.info

  2. Taito Beach (swimming beach)

    Sandy beachBeginner-friendly

The free car park serves the Taito swimming beach and Taito Beach Park. Waves at Taito tend to be thick and mellow. On small days that suits beginners and longboard practice.

In summer, look for the swimming-area ropes and the zones where surfing is allowed. Sources: surfers-ocean.com · surfarea.info

  3. Cape Taitō

    HeadlandLandmark

The cape marks the south end of Kujūkuri Beach, which runs 66 km from Cape Gyōbu. Much of it is a public park inside Minami Bōsō Quasi-National Park.

Its lighthouse stands 60 m tall and can be seen about 41 km out to sea. Together with the breakwater, the cape softens incoming swell at Taito. Sources: surfers-ocean.com · en.wikipedia.org · surfarea.info

When it works

What Taito needs to fire

These are the exact rules behind Kiwi's rating for this spot. Every hour of the forecast is scored on all four, then turned into a rating of 1 to 5 stars.

Swell

North-east to south swell

Taito opens to swell from the north-east round to the south. Local guides say it reacts especially well to north-east swell.

Wind

West wind is offshore

Offshore wind here comes from the west. Last December, winds counted as offshore on about 87% of days.

Tide

Best around mid tide

Our model rates Taito best at mid tide.

Size

Ideal at 1–2 metres

Waves of 1 to 2 m work best. Under about 0.5 m it is too small, and from about 3 m it gets too big.

Shortcut: look for a 1–2 m swell from the east or north-east, a west wind and mid tide. That is Taito at its best.

Seasons

The best months to surf Taito

We replayed Kiwi's rating on every day of the last year and counted how often Taito's best window reached 4 or 5 stars.

Days with 4 or 5 starsDays with 3 stars or more
Kiwi's current rules replayed on archived Open-Meteo wave and weather data, 2025-10-30 – 2026-10-31 (367 days). One year, so one season of each month. Model data, not observations.

Dec–FebThe best surf of the year

December and January each had 42% of days rated 4+ and about 70% rated 3+. February is still good, with half its days at 3+.

Mar–MayLeaner spring

Only 20–26% of days reach 3+, and April is the quietest of the three months. March is also the coldest water of the year, at about 15°C.

Jun–AugWarm water, fair odds

Between 35% and 47% of days rate 3+, and June is the best of the three. The water warms from about 22°C to 27°C. The swimming beach is open in this season, so check where surfing is allowed.

Sep–NovPatchy, then picking up

September and October had no 4+ days in our data, and October had only 15% at 3+. November climbs back to 40%. When storms bring strong south winds, the port and nearby hills can shelter Taito.

Need to know

Before you go

Hazards and rescue

Currents run near the breakwater, so keep an eye on your drift. A strong northerly swell can push waves into the breakwater, which can be dangerous.

Sea fog can cut visibility. If you cannot see well, stay out of the water. In Japan, the coast guard emergency number for trouble at sea is 118.

In 2025 the swimming beach ran from 19 July to 24 August, 8:30 to 16:30. Sources: surfarea.info · surfers-ocean.com

Getting there

By car, leave the Chiba-Tōgane Road at Tōgane IC. Take Route 126 for about 4 km, then the Tōgane Kujūkuri toll road (210 yen for a normal car). At Makame toll gate, switch to the Kujūkuri toll road (420 yen) and exit at Ichinomiya IC.

By train, JR Taitō Station is about 4 km from the cape, roughly a 45-minute walk. Sources: surfers-ocean.com · en.wikipedia.org

Parking and facilities

A free car park sits in front of the swimming beach in Misaki-machi Nakahara, Isumi. It is open 24 hours, holds about 100 cars, and has toilets and free showers.

The car park is about a 3-minute walk from the water. In summer, expect traffic controls and crowds. Sources: surfers-ocean.com · surfarea.info

Crowds and etiquette

Taito is a popular longboard spot, and the breakwater peak gets the most crowded. On good days, and when a strong south wind blows, surfers come from around the area. Take care to avoid collisions.

Respect the local rules on the breakwater side. Sources: surfarea.info

Water temperature and wetsuit

The water runs from about 15°C in March to about 27°C in August. From January to April it sits at about 15–16.5°C. In May and December it is about 19°C. From July to October it is about 24–27°C.

On cloudy days, near a river mouth, or if you have a slim build, go one step warmer with your wetsuit. Sources: surfers-ocean.com

Shops and lessons

Surf shops and schools near the beach offer rentals and lessons. North Chiba as a whole has many surf shops, schools and board rentals. Sources: surfarea.info · surfers-ocean.com

How Kiwi rates it

Where the numbers come from

The method

Kiwi takes Open-Meteo's wave and wind models (ECMWF WAM, Météo-France, NOAA GFS and Open-Meteo's best-match blend) at a point about 5 km off Taito. There is no buoy correction here yet: these are the models as they come.

Each hour is scored on the four rules above (swell, wind, tide, size). The stars are calibrated on a full year of data for Japan, so 4 stars at Taito is a genuinely good day by that country's standard.

What we can say

1 yearof data behind the stars
4×new forecast runs a day

The season chart and the stars use the same rules, replayed on the archive: a month marked good was good by these rules, not by a surf report.

Without a buoy nearby, the size at the beach is our model's estimate, not a measurement.

FAQ

Taito surf questions

Is Taito good for beginners?

Yes, on small days. The waves are usually mellow, and local guides rate it suitable for beginners and longboarders. When it is crowded or bigger, you need the skill to read the lineup and stay clear of others.

When is the best time to surf Taito?

December and January are best: 42% of days rated 4+ and around 70% rated 3+. October is the weakest month in our data.

How cold is the water in Taito in December?

About 19°C in December.

What wind is offshore at Taito?

Our forecast treats a west wind as offshore. Local guides say west to south-west keeps the faces clean, and the spot can handle south winds that spoil nearby beaches.

Where do I park at Taito?

Use the free 24-hour car park in front of the swimming beach. It holds about 100 cars and has toilets and showers.

Is Taito crowded?

It often is, especially at the breakwater peak. Crowds grow on good days and when strong south winds push surfers here from other spots.

Check Taito before you drive
