Forecast point: Tanjung Aan (-8.912, 116.329). Waves = estimated breaking height at the beach. Data: Open-Meteo wave and weather models (CC BY 4.0). Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information. Surf at your own risk.

Watch the tide column first. At dead low tide parts of the reef can get very shallow or even dry out. Plan your sessions for the mid-to-high part of the tide.

The break guide

Surfing Tanjung Aan: the peak and nearby breaks

Tanjung Aan is a fairly exposed reef that gets most of its waves from groundswell. Waves break well out in the middle of the bay, so expect a long paddle or a short boat ride. Several other reefs lie within about 5 km if Aan is not working.

  1. Tanjung Aan

    Reef breakRight and left

The right is the main wave here. It peels slowly and gives you time to get to your feet, which suits longboards and practice on turns. The left is shorter and gentler, and it is a good choice when the right gets busy.

The bottom is a mix of deep reef and sand. Our own setup still rates it intermediate+ because of the shallow reef, the boat access and the currents. Sources: lmbksurfhouse.com

When it works

What Tanjung Aan needs to fire

These are the exact rules behind Kiwi's rating for this spot. Every hour of the forecast is scored on all four, then turned into a rating of 1 to 5 stars.

Swell

South to west swell

The reef faces south (about 190°) and takes swell from between 180° and 250°.

Wind

Offshore from the north

The best wind blows from the north, around 20°. Winds from the south side of the compass blow onshore on this south-facing reef.

Tide

Mid to high tide

Mid-to-high tide works best here. Shallow reef is one of the listed hazards.

Size

Ideal 1.2 to 2.5 m

Waves under about 0.8 m are usually too small, and 1.2–2.5 m is the sweet spot. Above about 3.5 m it is too big.

Shortcut: look for a 1.2–2.5 m south-to-west swell with a northerly wind on a mid-to-high tide.

Seasons

The best months to surf Tanjung Aan

We replayed Kiwi's rating on every day of the last year and counted how often Tanjung Aan's best window reached 4 or 5 stars.

Days with 4 or 5 starsDays with 3 stars or more
Kiwi's current rules replayed on archived Open-Meteo wave and weather data, 2025-10-30 – 2026-10-31 (367 days). One year, so one season of each month. Model data, not observations.

Nov–DecThe best run of the year

December is the strongest month, with 32% of days rated 4+ and 52% rated 3+. November follows with 17% and 47%.

Jan–FebQuieter than you might expect

Only 3–4% of days reach 4+, and 7–13% reach 3+. One local guide calls the wet season the best time overall, so stay flexible and check the forecast.

Mar–AprA second good window

April matches November, with 17% of days at 4+ and 47% at 3+. One forecaster rates March as the cleanest month, with clean waves about 39% of the time.

May–OctDry season, mostly off

Good days are rare, and from August to October almost none reach 3+. Trade winds in the dry season can leave the bay choppy.

Hazards

Watch for the shallow reef and the currents. Rips and rocks are also reported here.

At dead low tide some sections can get very shallow or even dry. Check the tide before you go out. Sources: surf-forecast.com · lmbksurfhouse.com

Getting there

From Kuta it is about a 15-minute scooter ride east on a paved road through the coastal hills.

The nearest airport is Selaparang (Mataram), AMI, about 48 km away in a straight line. Bali's Denpasar airport, DPS, is about 129 km away. Sources: lmbksurfhouse.com · surf-forecast.com

Parking and paddling out

There is plenty of parking on the beach, and local warungs sell drinks such as coconuts.

The paddle out takes about 15–20 minutes. Many surfers pay a local boatman a small fee to take them to the peak in an outrigger perahu and collect them afterwards. Sources: lmbksurfhouse.com

Boards

Several warungs on the sand rent longboards and funboards. Sources: lmbksurfhouse.com

Crowds and etiquette

Reports differ: one forecaster says it is rarely crowded, while a local surf house lists the crowd as busy.

When the right gets packed, the left is a calmer option. Sources: surf-forecast.com · lmbksurfhouse.com

Water temperature and what to wear

The sea stays warm all year, from about 26.5°C in August and September to about 29.8°C in December.

Wear a rash vest to protect yourself from the sun. Sources: surf-forecast.com

Best time of day

Plan around the tide rather than the clock, and aim for the mid-to-high stage.

In early November the sun rises around 5:45 and sets around 6:10 pm local time (WITA). Sources: lmbksurfhouse.com · surf-forecast.com

After the surf

The white-sand bay is good for a swim, and Bukit Merese hill is a popular place to watch the sunset. Sources: lmbksurfhouse.com

How Kiwi rates it

Where the numbers come from

The method

Kiwi takes Open-Meteo's wave and wind models (ECMWF WAM, Météo-France, NOAA GFS and Open-Meteo's best-match blend) at a point about 5 km off Tanjung Aan. There is no buoy correction here yet: these are the models as they come.

Each hour is scored on the four rules above (swell, wind, tide, size). The stars are calibrated on a full year of data for Indonesia, so 4 stars at Tanjung Aan is a genuinely good day by that country's standard.

What we can say

1 yearof data behind the stars
4×new forecast runs a day

The season chart and the stars use the same rules, replayed on the archive: a month marked good was good by these rules, not by a surf report.

Without a buoy nearby, the size at the beach is our model's estimate, not a measurement.
