Forecast point: Toyoma (36.999, 140.982). Waves = estimated breaking height at the beach. Data: Open-Meteo wave and weather models (CC BY 4.0). Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information. Surf at your own risk.

Watch the wind first. Toyoma is at its best with wind from the west, which blows offshore here. Local guides say west to northwest is the ideal direction.

The break guide

Toyoma and the breaks nearby

Toyoma is a sand-bottom beach on the Iwaki coast of Fukushima. It reacts quickly to swell, and when the sandbars are in good shape it can give powerful, clean waves. Several other spots sit within about 6 km, which helps when swell direction, wind or crowds don't suit Toyoma.

  1. Toyoma Beach (豊間)

    Beach breakAll levels

This is the main sand beach, and it faces east toward swells from the north round to the south. When the banks line up, it can turn on powerful, glassy waves.

Our forecast rates it for all levels. One Japanese spot guide puts it at intermediate and up, so beginners should pick small, calm days. Sources: surf-ok.jp · japan.surfride.net

  2. Futamigaura (二見ヶ浦)

Futamigaura is the closest neighbouring spot, about 1.2 km from Toyoma. It is worth a look when swell direction, wind or crowds don't suit Toyoma. Sources: japan.surfride.net

The Japan Coast Guard runs a camera at Shioyazaki Lighthouse in Usuiso. You can turn it in any direction, and its listing mentions Usuiso, Numanouchi, Toyoma and Futamigaura. The beach below it faces east. Sources: surfers-ocean.com

When it works

What Toyoma needs to fire

These are the exact rules behind Kiwi's rating for this spot. Every hour of the forecast is scored on all four, then turned into a rating of 1 to 5 stars.

Swell

North to south swells work

Toyoma faces east and is open to swell from north round to south. Local guides say swell keeps coming through all year.

Wind

West wind is offshore

Wind from the west blows offshore and cleans up the faces. Last December, about 87% of days had offshore wind.

Tide

Mid tide is best

Aim for the middle of the tide. Use the tide table to time your session around it.

Size

Best at 1.0–1.8 m

Waves of 1.0 to 1.8 m are ideal, and under 0.5 m is usually too small. Above about 3.0 m it gets too big.

Shortcut: look for a 1–1.8 m swell, a west wind and mid tide, and Toyoma should be on.

Seasons

The best months to surf Toyoma

We replayed Kiwi's rating on every day of the last year and counted how often Toyoma's best window reached 4 or 5 stars.

Days with 4 or 5 starsDays with 3 stars or more
Kiwi's current rules replayed on archived Open-Meteo wave and weather data, 2025-10-30 – 2026-10-31 (367 days). One year, so one season of each month. Model data, not observations.

Nov–FebPrime time

This is the best stretch, with good days on 43–55% of days in our model. In January, 81% of days were at least fair.

Mar–AprThe quiet spell

March is the weakest month, with good days on only 6% of days. April improves a little, to 13% good days.

May–AugMixed but often fun

Fair-or-better days run from 48% to 65%, and July has the most good days of summer at 32%. Local guides note that swell keeps coming through every season.

Sep–OctLeaner months

Good days drop to about 9–10% in our model. Even so, 33–40% of days are still at least fair.

Need to know

Before you go

Hazards

Rip currents form near the breakwaters, so stay clear of them and watch where the water is pulling.

Toyoma reacts quickly to swell, and its waves can be powerful when the banks are good. Follow local signs on where you may enter the water, especially during swimming season. Sources: japan.surfride.net · surf-ok.jp

Getting there

The beach is in Taira Toyoma, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. Sources: japan.surfride.net

Parking and toilets

You can park at the Toyoma disaster-prevention green space car park or at Toyoma Parking, which together hold a few dozen cars. There are toilets.

Spaces are limited, so don't leave your car for very long, and be considerate of the neighbours. Sources: japan.surfride.net

Crowds and etiquette

As the main spot in Iwaki, Toyoma draws many locals and visitors at weekends. On busy days, take your time paddling out and give others room. Sources: japan.surfride.net

Water temperature and wetsuit

The water is coldest in February at about 13.8°C and warmest in August at about 24.6°C.

In January and February, a 5/4 or a warm 4/3 with boots makes sense. From March to June (15–17°C) and in December (16.3°C), a 4/3 is a good choice. In November (18.6°C), a 3/2 should do.

July to October runs 21.6–24.6°C, so a springsuit or thin 3/2 is plenty, and on the warmest August days you may need even less.

Check the cams

The Coast Guard camera at Shioyazaki Lighthouse can turn in any direction and is a handy check for Toyoma. Looking the evening before helps you plan the next day, but the cameras show nothing at night. Sources: surfers-ocean.com

How Kiwi rates it

Where the numbers come from

The method

Kiwi takes Open-Meteo's wave and wind models (ECMWF WAM, Météo-France, NOAA GFS and Open-Meteo's best-match blend) at a point about 5 km off Toyoma. There is no buoy correction here yet: these are the models as they come.

Each hour is scored on the four rules above (swell, wind, tide, size). The stars are calibrated on a full year of data for Japan, so 4 stars at Toyoma is a genuinely good day by that country's standard.

What we can say

1 yearof data behind the stars
4×new forecast runs a day

The season chart and the stars use the same rules, replayed on the archive: a month marked good was good by these rules, not by a surf report.

Without a buoy nearby, the size at the beach is our model's estimate, not a measurement.
